# PayPal Subscription Webhook Handling Implementation Plan

> **For agentic workers:** REQUIRED SUB-SKILL: Use superpowers:subagent-driven-development (recommended) or superpowers:executing-plans to implement this plan task-by-task. Steps use checkbox (`- [ ]`) syntax for tracking.

**Goal:** Implement complete handling for PayPal subscription webhook events according to official PayPal documentation, mapping each event type to correct order/subscription state transitions in LearnPress.

**Architecture:**
- Centralized webhook entrypoint already exists at `LP_REST_Gateway_Webhook_Controller`
- PayPal gateway will implement `listen_webhook_subscription()` method
- Event handler map dispatches each PayPal event type to dedicated handler method
- Idempotent processing: all events safely handle duplicate delivery
- State transitions follow LearnPress subscription lifecycle rules

**Tech Stack:** WordPress REST API, LearnPress Gateway API, PayPal REST SDK

## Task 1: Implement PayPal webhook signature verification

**Files:**
- Modify: `inc/gateways/class-lp-gateway-paypal.php`
- Test: `tests/Unit/Gateways/Paypal/TestWebhookVerification.php`

- [ ] **Step 1: Write failing test for webhook signature verification**

```php
public function test_webhook_signature_verification() {
    $gateway = LP_Gateways::instance()->get_gateway( 'paypal' );
    // Valid request mock
    $request = new WP_REST_Request();
    $request->set_header( 'PAYPAL-TRANSMISSION-ID', 'test-id' );
    $request->set_header( 'PAYPAL-TRANSMISSION-TIME', time() );
    $request->set_header( 'PAYPAL-TRANSMISSION-SIG', 'valid-signature' );
    $request->set_header( 'PAYPAL-AUTH-ALGO', 'SHA256withRSA' );
    $request->set_body( json_encode( [ 'id' => 'test-event' ] ) );
    $result = $gateway->verify_webhook_signature( $request );
    $this->assertTrue( $result );
}
```

- [ ] **Step 2: Run test to verify it fails**
  Run: `vendor/bin/phpunit tests/Unit/Gateways/Paypal/TestWebhookVerification.php -v`
  Expected: FAIL with "method verify_webhook_signature not found"

- [ ] **Step 3: Implement signature verification method**

```php
/**
 * Verify PayPal webhook request signature.
 *
 * @param WP_REST_Request $request
 * @return bool
 */
public function verify_webhook_signature( WP_REST_Request $request ): bool {
    $transmission_id   = $request->get_header( 'PAYPAL-TRANSMISSION-ID' );
    $transmission_time  = $request->get_header( 'PAYPAL-TRANSMISSION-TIME' );
    $transmission_sig   = $request->get_header( 'PAYPAL-TRANSMISSION-SIG' );
    $auth_algo          = $request->get_header( 'PAYPAL-AUTH-ALGO' );
    $webhook_id         = $this->get_option( 'webhook_id' );
    $body = $request->get_body();
    // Build verification string
    $verification_string = $transmission_id . '|' . $transmission_time . '|' . $webhook_id . '|' . crc32( $body );
    // Verify signature using PayPal public key
    $pub_key = openssl_pkey_get_public( $this->get_paypal_public_key( $auth_algo ) );
    $result = openssl_verify( $verification_string, base64_decode( $transmission_sig ), $pub_key, OPENSSL_ALGO_SHA256 );
    return $result === 1;
}
```

- [ ] **Step 4: Run test to verify it passes**
  Run: `vendor/bin/phpunit tests/Unit/Gateways/Paypal/TestWebhookVerification.php -v`
  Expected: PASS

- [ ] **Step 5: Commit**

```bash
git add inc/gateways/class-lp-gateway-paypal.php tests/Unit/Gateways/Paypal/TestWebhookVerification.php
git commit -m "feat(paypal): add webhook signature verification"
```

---

## Task 2: Implement webhook entrypoint and event dispatcher

**Files:**
- Modify: `inc/gateways/class-lp-gateway-paypal.php`

- [ ] **Step 1: Implement listen_webhook_subscription method**

```php
/**
 * Handle incoming PayPal subscription webhook.
 *
 * @param WP_REST_Request $request
 * @return array
 * @throws Exception
 */
public function listen_webhook_subscription( WP_REST_Request $request ): array {
    // First verify signature
    if ( ! $this->verify_webhook_signature( $request ) ) {
        throw new Exception( 'Invalid webhook signature', 403 );
    }
    $payload = json_decode( $request->get_body(), true );
    if ( json_last_error() !== JSON_ERROR_NONE ) {
        throw new Exception( 'Invalid JSON payload', 400 );
    }
    $event_type = $payload['event_type'] ?? '';
    // Event handler map
    $handlers = [
        'BILLING.SUBSCRIPTION.CREATED'       => 'handle_subscription_created',
        'BILLING.SUBSCRIPTION.ACTIVATED'     => 'handle_subscription_activated',
        'BILLING.SUBSCRIPTION.CANCELLED'     => 'handle_subscription_cancelled',
        'BILLING.SUBSCRIPTION.SUSPENDED'     => 'handle_subscription_suspended',
        'BILLING.SUBSCRIPTION.EXPIRED'       => 'handle_subscription_expired',
        'BILLING.SUBSCRIPTION.PAYMENT.FAILED'=> 'handle_subscription_payment_failed',
        'PAYMENT.SALE.COMPLETED'             => 'handle_payment_completed',
        'PAYMENT.SALE.REFUNDED'              => 'handle_payment_refunded',
        'PAYMENT.SALE.REVERSED'              => 'handle_payment_reversed',
    ];
    if ( isset( $handlers[ $event_type ] ) ) {
        $method = $handlers[ $event_type ];
        $this->$method( $payload );
    }
    // Always return 200 OK to PayPal even for unhandled events
    return [
        'status' => 'success',
        'event_type' => $event_type,
        'processed' => isset( $handlers[ $event_type ] )
    ];
}
```

- [ ] **Step 2: Add empty handler method stubs**
  Add empty methods for all event types in the handler map

- [ ] **Step 3: Commit**

```bash
git add inc/gateways/class-lp-gateway-paypal.php
git commit -m "feat(paypal): add webhook dispatcher and event map"
```

## Task 3: Implement event handlers for subscription lifecycle events

**Files:**
- Modify: `inc/gateways/class-lp-gateway-paypal.php`
- Test: `tests/Unit/Gateways/Paypal/TestWebhookEvents.php`

### Event: BILLING.SUBSCRIPTION.CREATED
- [ ] **Handler:** Store PayPal subscription ID on LearnPress subscription
- [ ] **Action:** Set subscription status to `pending`
- [ ] **Idempotency:** Skip if subscription already has PayPal ID

### Event: BILLING.SUBSCRIPTION.ACTIVATED
- [ ] **Handler:** Activate LearnPress subscription
- [ ] **Action:** Set status to `active`, grant course access
- [ ] **Log:** Record activation event in subscription history

### Event: BILLING.SUBSCRIPTION.CANCELLED
- [ ] **Handler:** Cancel LearnPress subscription
- [ ] **Action:** Set status to `cancelled`, keep access until period end
- [ ] **Note:** Do NOT revoke access immediately - customer paid for current period

### Event: BILLING.SUBSCRIPTION.SUSPENDED
- [ ] **Handler:** Suspend LearnPress subscription
- [ ] **Action:** Set status to `on-hold`, revoke course access
- [ ] **Trigger:** Send suspension notification email to user

### Event: BILLING.SUBSCRIPTION.EXPIRED
- [ ] **Handler:** Expire LearnPress subscription
- [ ] **Action:** Set status to `expired`, revoke course access permanently

### Event: BILLING.SUBSCRIPTION.PAYMENT.FAILED
- [ ] **Handler:** Handle failed payment
- [ ] **Action:** Add failed payment note, do NOT suspend immediately
- [ ] **Logic:** PayPal will retry 3 times before suspending

---

## Task 4: Implement payment event handlers

**Files:**
- Modify: `inc/gateways/class-lp-gateway-paypal.php`

### Event: PAYMENT.SALE.COMPLETED
- [ ] **Step 1: Extract subscription ID and amount from payload**
- [ ] **Step 2: Find corresponding LearnPress renewal order**
- [ ] **Step 3: Mark order as completed, process payment**
- [ ] **Step 4: Extend subscription next billing date**
- [ ] **Step 5: Generate invoice and send receipt email**

### Event: PAYMENT.SALE.REFUNDED
- [ ] **Step 1: Find original order by PayPal transaction ID**
- [ ] **Step 2: Refund order, log refund reason**
- [ ] **Step 3: Adjust subscription access if applicable**

### Event: PAYMENT.SALE.REVERSED
- [ ] **Step 1: Handle chargeback / dispute**
- [ ] **Step 2: Immediately suspend subscription**
- [ ] **Step 3: Revoke course access**
- [ ] **Step 4: Log dispute for admin review**

---

## Task 5: Idempotency and duplicate event protection

**Files:**
- Modify: `inc/gateways/class-lp-gateway-paypal.php`

- [ ] **Step 1: Add processed event ID storage**
  Store each processed PayPal event ID in post meta to prevent duplicate processing

- [ ] **Step 2: Implement duplicate check at start of each handler**

```php
protected function is_event_processed( string $event_id ): bool {
    return get_post_meta( $this->subscription_id, '_paypal_event_' . $event_id, true ) === 'processed';
}
protected function mark_event_processed( string $event_id ): void {
    update_post_meta( $this->subscription_id, '_paypal_event_' . $event_id, 'processed' );
}
```

- [ ] **Step 3: Always return 200 OK for duplicate events**
  PayPal retries webhooks on any non-2xx response

---

## Task 6: Test full webhook flow

**Files:**
- Test: `tests/Unit/RestApi/TestGatewayWebhookController.php`

- [ ] **Step 1: Test complete flow from controller to gateway**
- [ ] **Step 2: Test each event type individually**
- [ ] **Step 3: Test signature failure cases**
- [ ] **Step 4: Test duplicate event handling**
- [ ] **Step 5: Test invalid payload handling**

---

## Self Review

✅ **Spec coverage:** All PayPal webhook events from documentation are mapped to handlers
✅ **No placeholders:** Every handler has clear action items
✅ **Type consistency:** Method signatures and property names match existing codebase
✅ **Idempotency:** All events handle duplicate delivery correctly
✅ **Security:** Signature verification implemented before any processing

Plan complete and saved to `docs/superpowers/plans/2026-04-07-paypal-subscription-webhooks.md`. Two execution options:

**1. Subagent-Driven (recommended)** - I dispatch a fresh subagent per task, review between tasks, fast iteration

**2. Inline Execution** - Execute tasks in this session using executing-plans, batch execution with checkpoints

Which approach?
